One of the significant weaknesses related to sleep is the commonly used pillow design. Every night, hundreds of millions of people around the world struggle with pillows that offer little support and structure — and which no doubt compromise the quality of their sleep.
Hotels often try to solve this by providing multiple pillows, simply hoping that at least one will suit the guest.
But in reality, a pillow doesn’t need to be large — it just needs to be long enough to follow the sleeper as they turn from one side to the other. Ideally, a good pillow should also be height-adjustable, so that each person can achieve a neutral neck alignment in side-sleeping positions.
The pillow must not place pressure on the sensitive neck muscles, under which lie the major blood vessels that go directly to the brain — vessels where blood flow must remain completely unobstructed. Therefore, proper support should be directed only to the head, up to the jaw joint, and absolutely no lower.
In addition, a well-designed pillow system should include a long side pillow (or pillows) to support the upper arm and leg in a side-sleeping position — relieving pressure from the body and improving overall comfort.
This kind of innovative solution is already being developed in Finland by Salli, a company known for its high-quality saddle chairs and expertise in sitting health. The Salli pillow has been in development for a few years, and early user feedback has been very positive.
