Can hypothyroidism be prevented or treated on your own?

Public healthcare doesn’t properly inform about this disease or how it can be avoided or cured, even though it is possible.

The thyroid requires good levels of several nutrients, such as D, Mg, Fe, I, Se, Zn. If the diet isn’t good enough, supplements aren’t used, or the intestines don’t absorb enough of these nutrients, hypothyroidism can appear in a latent form. Among menstruating women, iron deficiency is very common, and iodine deficiency affects the majority of Finns. Some people might even manage with just one seaweed pill daily. Women, in particular, should monitor their iron levels based on lab tests. Vitamin D intake should be at least 100 mcg per day, except during periods of sun exposure, like on a vacation.

Hypothyroidism is also linked to stress, gut health, and overall hormone balance in the body. It is much more common in women. This disease can manifest at many different levels. It’s almost a rule that women over 30 who gain weight inexplicably suffer from this condition, at least in a latent form.

In Finland, there are several doctors who have treated the disease using T3, the active thyroid hormone, as a medication. The use of T3 is allowed in six European countries. However, these doctors have systematically been suspended from treating thyroid patients, despite good treatment results. Thyroid patients have become upset with the patient organization, the Finnish Thyroid Association, because they feel it doesn’t truly represent their interests. As a result, they’ve formed their own association, Kilpirauhaspotilaat ry (Thyroid Patients Association), which does not allow doctors as members. Thyroid issues often lead to many other secondary problems. That’s why it’s of particular interest to the healthcare sector as a good source of revenue.

In standard lab tests, it’s worth also purchasing a T3 determination and remembering that since so many people have a deficiency in thyroid hormones, the average reference values aren’t necessarily healthy values. In healthy individuals, the T3 levels should be in the upper third of the reference range.
