Losing weight in Finland would be successful if the most effective possible means were used nationally, as part of national prevention-oriented public health care. There are dozens of these ways.
Now, the biggest culprit for being overweight is the government, which allows junk food giants to sell harmful, addictive and fattening products without restraint. By the time the child starts school, the child has seen tens of thousands of junk food advertisements, which have certainly shaped attitudes. For a child to mentally resist junk food, a very aware and skilled home is needed, where an aware counterculture of poor food culture is actively created. Only very few homes are capable of that. In the majority of homes, the parents are also junk food addicts these days.
Another culprit for the obesity boom is the pharmaceutical industry, for whom fat people are a desirable customer. They will have many times more health problems than a slim and health-conscious person. Therefore, medical care operators who are in good terms with the pharmaceutical industry and patient organizations under the influence of the pharmaceutical industry are all hindering effective preventive health care.
Unfortunately, even the treatment recommendations (doctors’ manuals) very poorly present non-drug treatments that go to the root causes and prevent them.
